About The Artist - Timothy Alowa
Culture: St. Lawrence Island Yupik
When Timothy was 8 years old, in the winter, he came home from school and his Dad told him to "push" the button on the ivory carving. To Timothy that inspired him to carve ivory. This was in the late 1950's. He took his work and studied under his father. He has altered some changes in packing the pieces he carves and the button that is on the carving. Timothy admired his father's work, whom he considered very smart in carving a piece with a button to make the carvings dance to the beat of the drum or in throwing a spear and catching sea mammals. Timothy considers it a puzzle and is mainly made for kids as a toy to enjoy.
