Diane Douglas Willard weaves traditional baskets from cedar bark and strips of spruce roots, which she gathers from local forests. These decorative containers are beautifully formed by intricately plaited or twined materials. The delicacy of this work is especially evident in baskets so small they would fit in a childs hand. She learned her craft from several teachers including Delores Churchill, Grace De Witt, Holly Churchill and Lucy Rainman. Diane now passes on these skills, which she has honed to a fine art, to young and old alike. She has led numerous workshops on weaving and gathering materials for baskets at the Totem Heritage Center in Ketchikan. In recognition for her contributions, the center awarded her a Certificate of Merit.
